you must remember this

Morning breaks,
But it's a pale reflection of the night before,
And with the dawn the shadows that brought such promise
Flee the light's relentless march across the floor.

The pillow holds the valley where your head once lay,
Empty now but for a memory that lingers,
Not wanting to leave, decides to stay
Yet refuses to be caught, slips through the fingers.

Darts swiftly twixt the crumpled sheets and hides,
Afraid to face the truth or to explain
The laughing apparition who now derides
One who loved and lost, then lost again.

The heart you held so gently in the night,
Took as your own and promised ne'er to leave,
Now lies discarded on love's landfill site,
Bruised and broken, left to grieve.

In the company of others, whose fate the same,
Fell for your charms and then withdrew,
Not knowing how to play your game,
Broke the rules by loving you.
